Chapter 41

Somehow, he made it through the rest of the day without finding Georgette, picking her up and carrying her off to his room so they could finish what she had started.

There was a twinge of guilt lurking at the back of his mind over the fact that he had dishonoured the unspoken rules of friendship, laying his hands on Henry’s sister under the family roof. But, then he pictured Georgette writhing in ecstasy in his arms, remembered the taste of her on his tongue, and he just couldn’t summon the appropriate remorse.

He would do it again, in a heartbeat. And if they had been somewhere more private, he certainly wouldn’t have been able to hold himself back at the end at all. He had behaved like a brute, completely lost all self-restraint.

Georgette was everything he had imagined, fantasised about, and more. She had surprised him on every level.

It pained him that she was just using him for a passing dalliance, more than any shame he felt at abusing Henry’s trust. Perhaps that was the true reason he had not pressed her for more at the end. He knew he would never be able to give her up if he had her fully.

The house was quiet, the hour late as Jonathan lay in bed. He had long ago given up on the hope of sleep, his mind in far too much turmoil to allow any rest.

Georgette was the sister of a duke. In a month’s time, she would travel to London and conquer the season with her vivacity and charm. Jonathan would be utterly forgotten in the crush of young swains falling over themselves to court her. And he could hardly blame her. He was an impoverished earl with nothing to offer but an ailing estate and a wicked temper. He was hardly worth her consideration, as much as it pained him to admit it.

Was this love, or simply torture?

Jonathan groaned, flinging an arm over his eyes as he rubbed absently at the ache in his chest. Kicking at the sheets that tangled around his legs from a night’s tossing and turning.

He knew what he should do. He should offer for Miss Campbell, burn through her dowry before she had a chance to regret her circumstances, dutifully sire an heir on her before she grew to despise him and took herself back to her mother.

He should, but he wouldn’t. He couldn’t.

No, the best thing to do would be to leave first thing in the morning. Plead some pressing estate issues to Henry and escape Georgette’s orbit. It was the only way he would preserve a shred of sanity, under the circumstances.

Distantly, he heard the clock strike two. Then, the soft patter of feet in the hall outside his room.

The door creaked open.

Damn that Miss Campbell, he should have known something like this would happen.

“Go away,” he croaked. Not even bothering to lift his head off the pillow.

“Jonathan?”

At the sound of her voice, Jonathan felt his heart lurch with stupid hope and relief.
